Mitsumi CR-4805TE

Introduction

Mitsumi announced this CD-RW drive a year ago at CeBIT 2000: The CR-4805TE (successor to the CR-4804TE, a 4x/4x/24x drive), which reads at 32x, writes at 8x, and rewrites at 4x.

The question is, why was Mitsumi so late in bringing a drive of this speed to the market? Other manufacturers already offer double the burning speeds. Mitsumi's strategy is different from theirs: rather than being on the bleeding-edge, they prefer to produce devices that will be as favorably-received as possible by the mass markets, thereby making their money through OEM deals.

So far, the strategy has worked: Mitsumi drives are extremely popular, and the CR-4805TE can be had for less than $140. The purpose of these next few pages is to show if, with the CR-4805TE, Mitsumi are producing quantity and quality, or merely quantity alone.

To a certain extent our tests revealed both.
