Rates

To measure the drive's speed we use CDSpeed 99. The following diagrams show the rate process (green) in relation to the rotation rate (yellow).

As you can see, the 32x reading rate was not quite achieved with all four types of CDs, though the rotation rate remains constant over the entire CD. Therefore, the rate increase is only due to the presence if more data on each individual track. A rotation rate increase would help here, as the example of LG's DRD-8080B shows.

On the other hand, CD-RWs are not usually read this fast, since the mediumīs rewritability comes from the burning being done on several layers. Therefrore the driveīs laser must first "look up" the data before proceeding to read, sometimes causing drives to take up to 50% longer to read rewritable CDs. However, in our tests, the CR-4805TE reads these CDs 75% as fast as it does the other types. This is above average.
